Before responding to the scene, police were informed that one of the suspects was wanted in connection with a prior homicide, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.
When police arrived, Gadson fled the scene on foot, police said. LaShanda Anderson, 36, and Chanel Barnes, 27, also of Philadelphia, got into a rented Nissan Armada.
Ignoring commands to stop, Anderson drove right at the police officers, according to the prosecutor’s office. One of the officers, a patrol captain and 27-year veteran, was struck by the open driver-side door.
Anderson then tried to deliberately run over a second officer, a sergeant, a 17-year veteran, who took out a gun and fired three shots, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Two of the shots hit Anderson, the prosecutor’s office said. The vehicle then veered, narrowly missing the sergeant, continued across the parking lot and onto an access road before coming to a stop. Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Barnes was arrested and charged with shoplifting. She was lodged in the Salem County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing.
The sergeant was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released. He is on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation into the shooting.
