Woman Killed, Suspect Search After Frantic NJ Mall Shooting Melee

A manhunt is underway after a woman was pronounced dead the scene.

An officer shot and killed a woman who police say tried to run him over outside a shopping center in New Jersey this weekend. A manhunt is underway for at a suspect.

The incident happened at the Deptford Crossing strip mall on 1800 Clements Bridge Road around 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, when police received a report of a shoplifting. When police arrived, they spotted three suspects identified as Raoul Gadson, LaShanda Anderson, 36, and Chanel Barnes, 27, all of Philadelphia.

As police approached, Gadson allegedly fled the scene on foot while Anderson and Barnes entered a rented Nissan Armada, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office. Police say they ordered Anderson to stop, but she accelerated toward them.

One of the officers, a patrol captain and 27-year veteran, was struck by the open driver-side door, according to the GCPO. Anderson then tried to deliberately run over a second officer, a sergeant, a 17-year veteran, who took out a gun and fired three shots.

He struck Anderson twice, according to the GCPO. The vehicle then veered, narrowly missing the sergeant, continued across the parking lot and onto an access road before coming to a stop. Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Barnes was taken into custody and charged with shoplifting. Gadson escaped and remains at-large, according to the GCPO. He faces robbery and assault charges.

The sergeant, who was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released, wil be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation of the shooting.

Earlier reports said a police officer reportedly shot into a vehicle as he held onto it, and then the vehicle drove away. "It is an officer-involved shooting under investigation by the GCPO," said Bernie Weisenfeld, a spokesman for the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.

Police, meanwhile, were still on the scene in Deptford Sunday as the investigation of the shooting outside the Marshalls and TJ Maxx stores in Deptford continued, according to Fox29.

Sources told ABC6 that the pursuit of the shoplifting suspects led to the firing of gunshots in the parking lot of Marshalls/TJ Maxx, where alleged shoplifting occurred.

Witnesses told CBS3 that police arrived as the shoplifter entered a car. An officer attempted to get the person out of the vehicle – and the cop even shot into the car – while trying to hold on. A police officer was transported to a hospital with injuries following the shooting, according to nj.com.
