Police Academy Recruits Catch the Spirit of Thanksgiving

Gloucester County Police Academy recruits collect $1,000 in food items over four weeks to help RCGC students in need.

Gloucester County Police Academy recruits from Class 51 caught the spirit of Thanksgiving, collecting $1,000 in food items over the last four weeks to help Rowan College at Gloucester County (RCGC) students in need.

On Tuesday, Nov. 21, 39 recruits gathered in the Police Academy lobby surrounded by stacks of bottled water and “grab and go” meals to donate to the College’s food pantry. Roadrunner’s Refuel, an on-campus pantry created to fight food insufficiency, opened its doors this past January with the mission that no student would have to go to class hungry. The academy places a strong focus on addressing community-oriented needs. Each of the recruit classes are motivated to participate in numerous philanthropic activities. Class 51’s friendly competition to make a difference in the lives of RCGC students resulted in a pickup truck filled with food.

“It’s amazing to know that we could all come together. Sometimes we don’t always agree on things, but this was one thing we definitely agreed on,” said Police Academy recruit Erica Quinones.

Sponsored by the RCGC Chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges, the pantry provides supplemental food to eligible students who are in need of assistance. Free and confidential, Roadrunner’s Refuel provides hungry students with meals that can be easily consumed on campus so that they can concentrate on their education.

The Gloucester County Police Academy operates as an autonomous unit within RCGC’s Division of Law and Justice. For more information about the Gloucester County Police Academy, visit RCGC.edu/PoliceAcademy.
