Driver Killed After Car Hits Large Stone, Mailboxes, Tree In South Jersey: Police

The driver, 38, was pronounced dead at the hospital. His passenger sustained a possible wrist fracture, officials said.

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ — A driver died after his vehicle left the roadway and hit several objects Saturday night in Gloucester County, authorities said. His passenger was also injured.

Franklin Township officers responded to the single-vehicle collision at 10:37 p.m. on the 3900 block of West Malaga Road, where they found a heavily damaged Kia Optima.

The initial investigation revealed that the vehicle left the roadway after entering the oncoming lane of travel. The Optima then struck a large landscape stone, several mailboxes and a tree, police said.

Robert Lafferty III, 38, of Williamstown, was treated at the scene and then brought to Jefferson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after. The passenger was treated for a possible wrist fracture and then transported to Cooper University Hospital, authorities said.

The crash remains under investigation.
