Undefeated West Deptford High School Football Team to Play for South Jersey Title

The Eagles face Cedar Creek in the championship game on Dec. 4.

The West Deptford High School football team still has the chance to become an undefeated South Jersey champion.

The top-seeded Eagles kept their championship hopes alive with a win over No. 4 seed Buena, 21-10, in the semifinals of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II playoffs Friday night, according to nj.com.

West Deptford will play No. 3 Cedar Creek, a 14-9 semifinal winner over No. 2 Haddonfield, at Rowan University in the championship game on Dec. 4. The Eagles improved to 10-0 with the win.

Buena held a 10-7 lead going into halftime, but the Eagles defense shut out the Chiefs in the second half and Gio Gismondi scored two of his three touchdowns in the fourth quarter of the West Deptford rally.

Gismondi had rushing touchdowns of 3 and 9 yards in the fourth quarter. His 1-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter was the first of the game for either side.

Buena responded to that score with a Tyler Rainear 27-yard field goal. Sam Crouch’s 3-yard run gave Buena the lead at the half.

West Deptford opened the playoffs with a 33-25 win over No. 8 Overbrook in the quarterfinals last week.

In order to preserve its undefeated season, West Deptford must get past Paulsboro next Saturday. The Eagles visit the Red Raiders at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28.
