WESTFIELD, NJ— A Westfield resident lost approximately $16,000 after falling victim to a scam involving multiple mobile banking apps, according to police.
Authorities said the victim sent the money through various payment apps before later realizing the transactions were part of a fraud scheme.
The incident was reported May 15, police said.
Officials did not release additional details about how the scam started or whether any suspects have been identified.
Scams involving payment apps and electronic money transfers have continued to rise in recent years, with victims often unable to recover funds once the money has been sent.
