Beloved Westfield Custodian Honored For Work Behind The Scenes

WESTFIELD, NJ — While students and teachers fill the hallways during the school day, much of the work that keeps Westfield High School running smoothly happens long after the final bell rings.

That behind-the-scenes effort was recognized recently when Francesco Dori, the school’s assistant head night custodian, received the Weyman Steengrafe Fellowship during the district’s 2026 Excellence in Education Awards.

The fellowship, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Westfield, honors full-time non-certificated employees who have served the district for at least five years while making a meaningful impact on students and staff.

School officials described Dori as someone known throughout the building for his professionalism, leadership, and willingness to help wherever needed.

“Mr. Dori is a positive example of hard work and professionalism,” Westfield High School Principal

Mary Asfendis said during the ceremony. “He is a true leader of his team, and models the qualities of responsiveness, attention to detail and pride in his work.”

Dori was recognized for consistently going “above and beyond” while making staff members feel supported and valued.

Administrators also praised the way he mentors and trains newer custodial staff members working the night shift.

Accepting the award, Dori thanked his coworkers and school administrators while speaking about the importance of creating a safe and welcoming environment for students and staff.

“We do this with honor,” Dori said. “I want them to feel safe.”
