On May 26th, John Tomaszewski will explore the profound biological and philosophical bridge between the objective world and our subjective experience. He will examine how the brain doesn't merely "record" reality like a camera but rather constructs it through a complex process of predictive coding and sensory integration. By deconstructing the neural pathways that translate raw physical data into the vivid landscape of our thoughts and perceptions, we can better understand the unique mental frameworks that define our professional and personal lives. John was a long-time employee at Dun &amp; Bradstreet in computers and engineering and served as director of Marketing Information Systems. Temple Sholom of Scotch Plains will transform a solemn Jewish tradition into a celebration of life with its "Books to Blooms" event on Sunday, May 31st, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at 1925 Lake Avenue, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076.
In Jewish tradition, sacred books and ritual items are never simply discarded — when they can no longer be used, they are given a dignified burial in the ground, often after being stored in a special repository called a Genizah. Temple Sholom will be laying to rest approximately 80 prayer books, along with any additional Jewish books or ritual items brought by community members.
Following the burial, attendees will plant a Pollinator Garden directly above the site in the temple's back parking lot — breathing new life into the ground where these cherished items will rest.
Event Schedule&nbsp;
Sunday, May 31st:
11:00 a.m. – Ritual burial of Jewish books and sacred items
12:00 p.m. – Lunch
12:30 p.m. – Pollinator Garden planting
Community members who have Jewish books or ritual items in need of proper disposal are invited to bring them to the event by 11:00 a.m., or deposit them in a designated temporary Genizah bin located in the temple lobby from May 21st through May 31st.
The celebration will be preceded by a special virtual presentation on Thursday, May 28th at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom, featuring Rabbi Mark Glickman, author of Sacred Treasure, who will speak about the world's most famous Genizah — the Cairo Genizah. Fairview Cemetery and Arboretum will host its popular Notable Residents Walking Tour on Sunday, May 31st, at 2:00 p.m. This guided event will explore the rich history of Westfield through the stories of community members laid to rest on the cemetery’s grounds.
Spanning 105 serene acres, Fairview Cemetery is both a tranquil resting place and a living archive of the town’s past. Visitors will learn about the lives and legacies of residents who helped shape Westfield, uncovering personal stories and contributions that continue to resonate today. This community event offers a unique opportunity to step into Westfield’s past while enjoying the peaceful beauty of Fairview Cemetery.
The tour will be led by local historian, Barbara Burton, who has a deep history with the town of Westfield. In addition to serving as a Trustee for the Westfield Historical Society, she has also served on the Board of Governor’s for the Miller Cory House and was a member of the Westfield Historic Preservation Commission. Most recently she curated an in-depth exhibit at the Reeve House, exploring the life and career of Virginia Apgar, one of the individuals featured on the Historic Notables Tour.
