I-78 East Lane Closures Expected In Union County

UNION COUNTY, NJ — Multiple lanes on Interstate 78 are scheduled to close beginning on Thursday night and through Saturday morning, announced New Jersey Department of Transportation on Thursday.

Express Lanes

I-78 eastbound Express lanes are scheduled to be closed beginning at 10 p.m. Thursday, July 6 until 6 a.m. Friday, July 7 in Springfield. All traffic will be directed to use I-78 eastbound Local lanes.

Local Lanes

In addition, I-78 eastbound Local lanes are scheduled to be closed beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, July 7 until 6 a.m. Saturday, July 8. All traffic will be directed to use I-78 eastbound Express.

Traffic wishing to take Route 24 westbound or the Springfield Avenue exits will be detoured.

The closures are necessary to reopen the I-78 eastbound Express right shoulder and the I-78 eastbound Local left shoulder and shift traffic back to its original configuration following the completion of bridge repairs.

Detours

The following detours will be in place:

I-78 eastbound to Route 24 westbound detour:

• Traffic on I-78 eastbound wishing to take the exit to Route 24 westbound will be directed to use I-78 eastbound Express lanes
• Stay in the right lane to take the crossover to the Local lanes, which is just past the Springfield Avenue overpass
• Take I-78 eastbound Local lanes past the Garden State Parkway to Exit 54 to Hillside/Irvington
• Cross over I-78 and take the ramp to I-78 westbound Local
• Take Exit 48 to Route 24 westbound to I-287/Springfield/Morristown

I-78 eastbound to Springfield Avenue detour:

• Traffic on I-78 eastbound wishing to take the exit to Route 24 will be directed to use I-78 eastbound Express lanes
• Stay in the right lane to take the crossover to the Local lanes, which is just past the Springfield Avenue overpass
• Take I-78 eastbound Local lanes past the Garden State Parkway to Exit 54 to Hillside/Irvington
• Cross over I-78 and take the ramp to I-78 westbound Local
• Take Exit 50B to Millburn/Maplewood
• Take Vauxhall Road to Springfield Avenue

The work is part of a $10 million state-funded maintenance project to repair bridge infrastructure at various locations in eight counties throughout North Jersey. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
