Man Arrested Following Fatal Drunk-Driving Wreck In Elizabeth: Prosecutor

The man left a bar in Elizabeth and drove the wrong way onto a highway ramp, where he struck and killed an oncoming driver: prosecutor.

ELIZABETH, NJ — An Elizabeth man is charged with driving while intoxicated and multiple traffic offenses in connection with a fatal accident in the City earlier this week, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Wednesday.

Sergio Gomez Ochoa, 36, was charged following a wreck that killed 63-year-old Everett Ewan of Elizabeth.

On Tuesday just after midnight, Ochoa allegedly left a bar on Dowd Avenue in Elizabeth and drove the wrong way onto a nearby highway ramp, where he struck an oncoming vehicle being driven by Ewan, Park said.

Ewan was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ochoa was taken to University Hospital in Newark for treatment of injuries.

An investigation involving the Union County Homicide Task Force, Union County Sheriff’s Office and Elizabeth Police Department is continuing.
