Members of the Rotary Club of Bernardsville Give Dictionaries to Bedwell Elementary School Students.
On March 4, 2014, the Rotary Club of Bernardsville visited Bedwell Elementary School to hand out dictionaries to all students in third grade. The purpose of the project is to provide children with their own personal dictionary that many educators and researchers see as a key to better reading, speech, and writing and which are deemed to support other school subjects, also. The Rotary Club of Bernardsville also visited third graders at St. Elizabeth’s and St. James during March.
The Rotary of Bernardsville has participated in this dictionary project for 5 years and estimates that it has given nearly a thousand dictionaries to local youngsters. Rotarians believe that they themselves act as role models to the students as they volunteer and give of their time to support others in the community. Cheryl Delgado, President of the Rotary Club of Bernardsville, said, “Even in this digital age, the kids enjoy getting these dictionaries. They settle down immediately with them reading selections from the book, looking up the twenty-third president, finding out temperature ranges in Minnesota, and so on. I know that we Rotarians get the biggest pleasure, though, seeing the happiness on many of the kids’ faces.”
