New Memorial Park Playground Celebrated With Ribbon Cutting

The Town undertook the roughly $660,000 replacement of Memorial Playground to make it fully ADA-compliant and accessible to all.

WESTFIELD, NJ - A ribbon-cutting was held on Wednesday to celebrate the new Memorial Park Playground in Westfield.

"With the work around the playground’s perimeter and the restroom repairs complete, we were able to formally celebrate this fantastic new addition to our recreational spaces with members of the Recreation Commission, Public Works, and the County of Union, New Jersey," according to Town of Westfield.

"We are thrilled to have this accessible playground available to the community, which reinforces our overall commitment to inclusivity in Westfield. It also continues the tradition established when the previous facility was installed as the Town’s first accessible playground by Eagle Scout Gregory Ryan, Jr.," continuedthe Town.

The Town Council passed a resolution at its May 14 meeting to authorize an award of contract to MRC Recreation, representing Game Time Inc, for the purchase and installation of playground equipment for Memorial Park through the Educational Services Commission of New Jersey (ESCNJ), at a fee not to exceed $660,136.96.

A special ordinance for $474,000 and various grant programs also awarded to Westfield for $185,000 will cover the cost of the purchase — including a $100,000 grant awarded as part of the Union County Board of County Commissioners' 2024 Union County Infrastructure and Municipal Aid grant program.

The playground is located at 713 Cumberland St. in Westfield.
