At a special Shabbat Hallelu service, 16 Brownie Girl Scouts earned the Scout's Patch and Pin Lehavah Award for scouts in grades 2 and 3 after working with Rabbi Erin Glazer for three learning sessions at Temple Emanu-El in Westfield, NJ. Lehavah means flame and while working toward the Lehavah Award, each Scout learned about herself, her family and her religion. The scouts were also asked to have others help them and to help others, too.
The Brownies worked with Rabbi Glazer in three learning sessions. The first session dealt with Jewish home and ritual objects (mezuzot); the second was an up close look and discussion of Torah; and the third focused on Prayer and God and what Shema means.
Rabbi Glazer said, "I had a lot of fun learning with the girls and I was consistently impressed by their enthusiasm and their great questions."
Susan Schuman, a Brownie Scout Leader and past president of the Sisterhood, and the Sisterhood of Temple Emanu-El organized and funded the program. Rachel Schuman, Susan's daughter and member of the program, said that, "This was a special learning experience for me and my friends."
Another member of the group, second grader Rachel Saxon, said "Jewish Brownies was a fun way to learn about being Jewish. Learning about the Torah was the best part. What made it even better was that a lot of my friends were there. I would definitely do it again!"
