Westfield Adds New Traffic Signals At Busy North Avenue Intersection

WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield officials say new traffic signals and other traffic control measures have been added at the busy intersection of North Avenue and Elm Street following ongoing safety concerns.

In a message to residents Friday, Mayor Jeremy Berman said the Town recently worked with the state Department of Transportation on several changes at the intersection.

According to Berman, two additional traffic lights and another stop bar have been added beyond the firehouse for drivers traveling east on North Avenue. A stop bar already existed in front of the firehouse before the latest updates.

The Town also said pedestrian crossing times on North Avenue have been extended.

“I’m pleased to report some positive progress on traffic control measures at the intersection of North Avenue and Elm Street,” Berman said.

Town officials and the DOT will continue monitoring the intersection to see whether additional short-term improvements are needed, according to the mayor.

“I’m grateful to the DOT for their responsiveness and we have agreed to jointly monitor the intersection to determine if additional short-term improvements are needed,” Berman said.
