Westfield Eagle Scout Elevates Theater Department

Ethan Hom built shelving to house tech equipment at the high school.

WESTFIELD, NJ - Westfield High School senior Ethan Hom used his Eagle Scout prjoect to provide an major upgrade to the Westfield High School theater department on Saturday, Oct. 6.

The project must benefit an organization other than the Boy Scouts of America, and it cannot be performed for an individual or a business or be commercial in nature. Completing an Eagle Project is a requirement in order for Boy Scouts to attain the Eagle Scout rank.

Eagle Scout candidate Hom, a Life Scout with Troop 273 in Westfield, works with the Technical Crew at the WHS theater department and knew there was a need for heavy duty shelving. According to Hom, hundreds of pounds of light, sound and technical equipment and materials were stacked in bins on the floors and in a storage room.

With the help of 34 scouts, scout parents, tech kids, and faculty, Hom oversaw the building of four heavy duty shelf units that will serve the WHS Theater Department for years to come.

Hom said the Home Depot of Garwood, Westfield Lumber and Home Center in Westfield, and Bartell's Farm and Garden Supply in Clark donated the lumber and supplies, and Hershey's Subs and Deli donated a huge sandwich platter.
Hom also said he owed Alan Devitt, Owain Rees and Mike Carvalho for masterminding the building details, Scoutmaster Eric Deutchman for being “Dr. D,” and his mom Frances for ordering and delivering food and drinks for 34 hungry volunteers.
