Westfield Girl Scouts Secure Silver Award

Holy Trinity girls celebrated for making a difference in community.

WESTFIELD, NJ - Clara Christian, Meagan Bourke, Sophie Vastine, and Emma Morasse of Holy Trinity's Girl Scout Troop 40879 completed two community projects in the Westfield area to earn their Girl Scout Silver Award.

The award is the the highest achievement awarded to a Girl Scout cadette. These sustainable projects must be presented by the cadettes and approved by community leaders, typically taking two years to complete with a minimum of 50 volunteer hours completed by each girl scout.

Christian refurbished a large waiting area at the Plainfield Y, she painted a seascape mural, collected books, and furniture to create a space at the Y that would serve younger siblings, parents, and grandparents during swim lessons and summertime camp, pictured with some members of the Plainfield Boy Scouts.

Bourke, Vastine and Morasse created a lending library at Houlihan Field in Westfield, they constructed a sophisticated structure and erected it near the sports field so that younger siblings could have books to read during long games. They spent hours in advance collecting books, donations and built the library themselves. The project was so successful other lending libraries have now been constructed per the mayor's office.

Mayor Shelley Brindle and Township Administrator James Gildea met with the troop to discuss the positive impact these girls have made upon the greater Westfield community and provided guidance for the future as they plan their Girl Scout Gold Award projects to be completed by their junior year.
