Westfield Hockey Beats Mendham in Cron Tourney

Blue Devils advance in competition.

The Westfield Blue Devils hockey team met an aggressive challenge by Mendham and held them at bay with calculating play and brilliant defense by goalie Morgan Bungerz.

Head coach Brendan Hickey was elated with his team's performance and goalie Morgan Bungerz in particular,  " our goalie had the best game I think he's ever had..our defense got a lot better today"

Mendham came to win however and applied relentless pressure from the start that would have wilted lesser teams.  Mendham  mounted a consistent attack until the final moments of the third period with 11 shots on goal in the first period and 13 in the third compared with only 5 shots on goal by Westfield in the first and third period.

But Westfield seemed unimpressed and methodically picked the Mendham defense apart.

Nick Attanasio had a great game scoring both times for Westfield. Once in the first and second period with an assist by C.J. Meyer.

With the game still close going into the third period Mendham's game offense never let up the pressure but just could not climb the mountain that was Morgan Bungerz on this night to score.

"We got a key player back on defense Liam Devin who is a veteran and is going to be one of our strengths on defense throughout the year and we got strong play from our seniors."

The shut out victory improves Westfield to 4-0 puts them in the finals to they face Morris Knolls next week.
