Westfield Police Warn Of Fake QR Code Scam

A new text message scam featuring a suspicious QR code is circulating, prompting Westfield Police to warn residents.

WESTFIELD, NJ — Police are warning residents about a QR scam being shared in a photo through text messages. (See the photo of the scam below)

The photo claims to be for a parking violation/toll violation. It also includes a QR code "to settle your unpaid balance."

"Do not scan the QR code included in the image and avoid interacting with the message in any way," said Westfield Police on Wednesday.

Police also shared tips to avoid text message and online scams:

  • Do not click links or scan QR codes from unknown or unexpected messages
  • Verify the sender before responding or taking any action
  • Be cautious of messages that create a sense of urgency or fear
  • Never share personal or financial information via text or unsecured websites
  • Look for spelling errors or unusual formatting, which are common in scams
  • Delete and report suspicious messages as spam
  • When in doubt, contact the organization directly using a trusted phone number or website

"Stay alert and help protect yourself and others from fraud," said police.
