Westfield Responds To Concerns About Teens In Local Park
The mayor and police chief said that when officers have tried to break up crowds of teens, they chanted, "We won't go."

WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield Mayor Shelley Brindle and Police Chief Christopher Battiloro sent out a release last week talking about "dozens of teens — estimated to be up to 100 at times" gathering at Mindowaskin Park after sundown, causing vandalism and other problems. The officials said that they would increase police patrols, mandate masks in the park, and more.
"We have woken up to find trash strewn all over the playground, equipment broken and vandalized, signs missing, and residents reporting rocks thrown at their cars," the pair wrote in a release. "Last week, the police also arrested two young adults in the park in the early evening hours for charges relating to controlled dangerous substance use."

They added, "Recently, an officer from the Juvenile Bureau was assigned to regularly patrol the area. This officer has consistently broken up crowds of teens, in spite of at times being taunted with chants of 'We won’t go.' "
They said, "In addition, these teens are not following public health protocols as they gather in groups without wearing masks or social distancing."
'Desperate for socialization'

The pair wrote, "Both of us are parents of high school students and recognize that these teens are desperate for socialization during this pandemic, and we empathize with how important it is for their mental health to engage with their peers. But this behavior is unacceptable. It is jeopardizing public safety, community health, public property, and the quality of life for nearby residents."
The town said they will take the following measures:
- Police will be installing temporary spotlights in the park every night to discourage loitering and easily identify trespassers.
- The police will also be increasing their patrolling of the park, apprehending repeat trespassers, taking them into juvenile custody, and requiring their parents to pick them up.
- Criminal charges for trespassing and other applicable criminal violations may be issued by police officers, where appropriate.
- Additional trash cans will be added to the park and playground.
- Masks will be mandated at the playground at all times (except for children under age two). Those without masks will be asked to leave.
- New signage will be added, reminding the public that the playground is for children under the age of 14.
- Installation of a fence with a locked gate is under consideration to enhance security and more easily issue citations for trespassing violations.
- Any residents near the park who observe trespassing after dark or any other unacceptable activity should call the Police Department at 908-789-4000.
