Westfield Team Places First In Odyssey Of The Mind State Finals

The team received a perfect score of 350 in a Division II "Vehicle Problem," as they worked together to construct a pirate ship with wheels.

WESTFIELD, NJ — A Westfield team from Roosevelt Intermediate School placed 1st in the state finals of the Odyssey of the Mind competition on April 1 in Princeton.

The team received a perfect score of 350 in a Division II "Vehicle Problem," as they worked together to construct a pirate ship with wheels and a battery-powered motor which they "sailed" to reclaim stolen treasure to return to a fictional Queen.

The so-called "Pirates and the Treasure" vehicle problem had the team also naming a pirate captain, creating a flag and song, and battling a sea monster.

Odyssey of the Mind is a problem-solving competition that poses unique, open-ended questions to participants, while emphasizing teamwork, budgeting, time management, public speaking, and more.

The Roosevelt team consists of 7th graders Hudson Crotty, Lukas Gesser, Jayden Liu, Kai Vasquez, and 8th graders Alex Giangone and Devan Regas and coach Ted Vasquez.
