Westifled Lacrosse Falls to Summit 5-1 in Gritty Defensive Battle

An offensive flurry in the first half from the Hilltoppers allotted them a 5-0 lead at half-time that Westfield was not able to overcome.

In the first faceoff of the season between lacrosse rivals Westfield and Summit, the Hilltoppers took the top spot, between the Blue Devils by 5-1.

The Records:  Both teams entered yesterday's game at 2-0 and looking to remain unbeaten.

The Final Score: Westfield ended up losing 5-1 on Wednesday. Summit raced out to a 5-0 advantage lead by an incredible offensive effort by Senior Sonny Rounds. The Hilltoppers, winners of the past two Tournament of Champions, raced out to a 5-0 halftime lead. Westfield managed to tighten up their defense, lead by goalie Jeff LaForge and defensemen Christian Burgdorf, Tom Snyder and Connor Melofchik did an incredible job making adjustments for the second half, leading to no Summit goals by the opposition.

Westfield Nick Arnold eliminated the chance of a shutout by scoring a goal late in the second half. Arnold's goal combined with the stingy D created the closest result #1 ranked Summit has had all season, after winning their first two games by 12 and 9 goals.

The Hero: The Westfield defense managed to hold the highest ranked team in the state to just 5 goals, and 0 in the second half. Being able to hold an offense that scored 13 and 14 goals in their first two games should prove to be an interesting rematch later in the season.
