Woman Escapes Fire, Breaks Bone After Jumping From 3rd Floor In Union County

ELIZABETH, NJ — A woman is hospitalized with a broken bone after jumping from the third floor to escape a house fire on Sunday, Elizabeth officials said.

At around 7:30 a.m, the Elizabeth Fire Department went to a reported three-alarm structure fire at 470 Jefferson Ave.

The large multi-family home is located between a five-story apartment building on one side and a large multi-family home on the other, said Elizabeth Spokeswoman Ruby Contreras.

A 50-year-old woman suffered one broken bone after jumping from the third floor of the building, said Contreras.

The woman was taken to University Hospital, then to St. Barnabas Hospital for further treatment.

Following the fire, the Red Cross of New Jersey helped 15 people from nine families who were displaced with temporary lodging, food, clothing, and other immediate needs.

Due to the intensity of the fire, the multi-family home next door had exterior damage.

The fire remains under investigation.
