Joe Fagan is a fourth generation West Orange resident and writer of a column on the history of West Orange. Fagan will present a program at the West Orange Public Library on one of West Orange's most famous and forgotten residents: Amos Alonzo Stagg.
Stagg was a member of both the college and pro football Hall of Fame and instrumental in the early development of both games. Mr. Stagg was also a college baseball standout who refused to play pro baseball because they served alcohol at games. His college football coaching career spanned over 70 years before he passed away at age 102. Stagg Field in West Orange is named in his honor as is the Mayor's Trophy Awarded annually to the winner of the West Orange High School - Seton Hall Prep football game.
