In Search of the Edison Phonograph Works

Join us for a multi-media guided talk by the park’s sound archivist. The talk will focus on the development of the Edison phonograph and the manufacturing operation in West Orange, NJ.
Thomas Edison once manufactured phonographs and phonograph records in an expansive complex known as the Edison Phonograph Works located next to the Laboratory in WO.   Today the laboratory survives as a historic site but the last of the Phonograph structures were demolished in 1974.
In this 30 minute illustrated talk, a Museum Curator will trace the history of the Phonograph Works from it's beginning in 1988 to the last Edison Voicewriter dictation machines made in 1960's.   Following the talk, visitors can join a brief walking tour to see where the buildings once stood.
