Beth Haiet Meyer will trace the unique place of nonprofits in the United States, comment on current trends and transparency requirements, and discuss nonprofit formation and IRS filing requirements as well as her own venture in the nonprofit sector. Time permitting, Beth will comment on the doctrine of charitable immunity and volunteer protection statutes.
Beth, a friend and member of Maplewood PRIT, earned a graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Organization Management and high-level seminar certificates in Nonprofit Financial Management from the Nonprofit Sector Resource Institute (NSRI) at Seton Hall University and in grant-writing from Essex County College. After volunteering in development as a New Jersey licensed attorney litigating insurance and plaintiff’s personal injury cases Beth left the practice of law for the nonprofit sector. Beth’s transition coincided with the sector’s nosedive on the coattails of the Wall Street bailout, the national recession and the Madoff fall-out. These events along with the advent of the internet and web-based marketing and fund-raising have compelled a reassessment by survivors within the Sector which Beth and Audrey will address. Fortunately, through a NSRI connection Beth formed, she found temporary employment in the influential Planning and Allocations Department of United Jewish Communities of MetroWest (UJC) which led to her current committee appointments on UJC’s Community Relations Committee Government Affairs Committee and a committee dedicated to providing humanitarian aid to Darfurian refugees.
