N.J. School's Roof Collapses Into Classroom, Staff Evacuated

No children or staff members were injured in the collapse, authorities say.

Newark, NJ - A New Jersey school's roof collapsed on Friday afternoon, however no children or staff members were injured, authorities say.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the roof collapse at the Maria L. Varisco Charter School located on Woodside Avenue in Newark took place around 12:53 p.m. No students were in the school at the time of the collapse and the staff members who were in the school were safely evacuated, officials said.

There are no reported injuries resulting from the collapse, authorities stated.

Investigators determined Friday that the roof collapsed into the second floor classroom area; the Department of Engineering inspected the building and has determined that the structure is stable, authorities said.

The cause of the collapse remains undetermined and under investigation, authorities added.
