No Suspects In Essex County Hiking Trail Shooting: Prosecutors

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Authorities have identified the shooting victim found on a hiking trail at Eagle Rock Reservation last week as a New York City resident, prosecutors announced Thursday.

Several hikers discovered the body of Kelsey Steels, 31, on March 4 at the reservation, near the border of West Orange and Montclair. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:16 p.m., according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

“The preliminary investigation indicates the victim was shot on the trail on Friday, March 4,” prosecutors said.

No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been identified, prosecutors said.
