Record Number Of Women Emerge Victorious In NJ Primary Election
59 female candidates will compete this November for seats in the New Jersey State Assembly… an all-time record for the state.
A record number of women will compete this November for seats in the New Jersey State Assembly, researchers announced Wednesday.
Following Tuesday’s Primary Election, 59 female candidates earned their party’s nomination in the 2019 General Election. The total shatters the previous record of 53 women candidates, which was set in 2017, the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) reported.

According to the CAWP:
- 38 candidates are Democrats and 21 are Republicans
- 25 are incumbents
- 27 are running as challengers
- 7 are running for open seats
The record for the New Jersey State Senate, also set in 2017, is 25 female candidates. That record will next be challenged in 2021.

Currently, 37 women serve in the New Jersey State Legislature, comprising 30.8% of members. In the senate, women hold 10 seats (25%) of the total number of senators, and in the assembly, women hold 27 seats (33.8%) of the total, CAWP stated.

“New Jersey ranks 19th among the 50 states with regards to women's representation in its state legislature, dropping six spots from its previous position after a remarkable year for women in state legislative races around the country in 2018,” CAWP researchers said.
