Sorority Is Building A ‘Little Library’ In West Orange

You can uplift an entire community with a good book, this sorority says.

WEST ORANGE, NJ — You can uplift an entire community with a good book. That’s the philosophy of a sorority that is building two Little Libraries to install in West Orange and New Brunswick.

Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority Inc. chapters across the nation are launching local Little Library campaigns, part of their mission to “empowering marginalized communities through literacy.”

The “libraries” consist of small, easily accessible book exchange boxes that are placed in public spaces. They work on the honor system of “taking and leaving a book.”

The local chapter of the sorority will be holding an unveiling ceremony for their library outpost in West Orange at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 28 at 145 Watchung Avenue.

The sorority is also collecting monetary and book donations to help fill the libraries with diverse books for kids and young adults, organizers said.

“Although we’ve shifted towards virtual learning, not everyone has access to digital devices,” said Jasely Molina, supporting Hermana of the Theta Eta Graduate/Professional Chapter of New Jersey.

“We're bridging this gap, ensuring our community can still connect to the world,” Molina added. “Everyone deserves the right to learn.”
