Council president Joe Krakoviak read the proclamation, which recognizes Ghebremicael for “dedicating her life to public service and volunteerism,” and notes that she made history as the first elected Ethiopian and Eritrean in the state of New Jersey – earning the most votes in the 2022 town council race.
“I have never met a more principled politician in my entire life than Asmeret,” Krakoviak said.
Ghebremicael wasn’t able to attend this week’s meeting due to a COVID diagnosis. However, her father and her son each spoke at the meeting on her behalf – emphasizing that she is grateful for the recognition.
