State Of Emergency In West Orange Amid Tropical Storm Isaias

WEST ORANGE, NJ — West Orange public safety officials are advising residents to stay at home as bad weather from Tropical Storm Isaias hits New Jersey on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch across New Jersey as Tropical Storm Isaias made its way north through the mid-Atlantic, packing winds of nearly 50 mph. Gov. Phil Murphy issued a state of emergency for all 21 counties that took effect at 5 a.m. and lasted until 4 p.m.

PSE&G reported that tens of thousands of customers lost power throughout Essex County, including West Orange.

On Wednesday night, West Orange Mayor Robert Parisi issued an advisory to local residents, urging them to stay home if bad weather hits.

Parisi recommended that all residents secure loose items around their property in advance of the storm.

“All residents should remain at home during this storm and only go outside if necessary,” he advised.

The West Orange Police Department reported several issues due to the storm, including downed trees and power lines, possible fires and road closures.


The West Orange Department of Emergency Management declared a local state of emergency on Tuesday afternoon.

Other local storm updates include:

  • The commuter jitney will run Tuesday morning as scheduled, however, the afternoon schedule may be changed or canceled as a result of the storm. Jitney riders should look for updates during the day.
  • Tuesday’s garbage and recycling will be picked up as scheduled.
  • With high winds expected, power outages are likely. In the event of a power outage, call PSE&G at 1-800-436-7734. It is also likely that trees or large branches may fall as a result of the high winds. In the event of a fallen tree or branches, call the non-emergency number of the police desk at 973-325-4000.
