To raise money for childhood cancer research, more than 23 volunteers shaved their heads at a recent St. Baldrick’s Foundation event. The event, held at the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh Club, in West Orange, NJ raised more than $38,200 as part of St. Baldrick’s mission to fund the best childhood cancer research, no matter where it takes place.

The recent head-shaving event celebrated 18 years of support from their dedicated community and featured shavees from the Essex Shillelagh Club, the Orange Fire Department, Summit High School Football team, and volunteers who have shaved their heads for over 10 years. John Terzo and his team from JT’s Barber Shop, who have been shaving participants heads since 2006, lent their support once again and performances by the Shillelagh Pipes and Drums, along with four local bands, brought the community together. With donations still coming in, the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh have now raised over $1.3 million to help Conquer Kids’ Cancer

Why all the shaved heads? Worldwide a child is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes, and one in five children diagnosed in the U.S. will not survive. Those who do survive often suffer long-term effects from treatments too harsh for their developing bodies. Donations raised at events like this have made it possible for St. Baldrick’s to fund more than $352 million in lifesaving childhood cancer research.
