Cardinals Escape Loss to Indian Hills

Westwood squeaked by Indian Hills in a hard fought 34-27 victory.

In non-conference action Thursday, the 3-1 Westwood Cardinals played host to the 1-3 Indian Hills Braves in an exciting game that left the Cardinals victorious, 34-27.

The Braves, led by freshman quarterback Mike Picinich who went 12-18 for 170 yards and 88 yards rushing, struck first with a 15-yard pass and catch by Brady Altana. But Westwood answered back on the legs of their ground one, two punch of Joey Spies who had 12 carries for 88 yards and Ryan Galloway who had 18 carries for 130 yards, 42 yards receiving and four touchdowns. The game went back and forth with the Braves taking a 21-20 lead going into halftime.

The second half saw a defensive battle with both defenses allowing just under 80 yards. But with 3:20 left the Cardinals found their rhythm, going 56 yards in a minute and a half, and taking a seven-point lead, but the Braves wouldn't be outdone. On their next possession, Altana caught a 38-yard touchdown pass.

But with 17 seconds left, the Braves decided to go for the win rather then the tie. Mike Picinich was stuffed behind the line by Cardinal Chris Napoli, ending any hopes of a Braves comeback.
