Thunderbirds Pluck Cardinals

Westwood loses defensive battle to Mahwah Thunderbirds 21-6

The high school football season is moving into the meat of the schedule, where teams find out whether they have the stuff to make a real push into the playoffs. Bergen County saw the Westwood Cardinals coming off a four-game winning streak Friday going into the match-up against the Thunderbirds of Mahwah. But the Cardinals lost to the Thunderbirds 21-6.

Westwood opened up the game fast on the opening kickoff when Ryan Galloway took the ball 86 yards for a touchdown giving the Cardinals a six point lead which they held throughout the first half in a very good defensive battle.

The second half saw a different Cardinal offense as they abandoned the run and started passing. Jeremy Taylor went 10-18 for 85 yards and Ryan Galloway caught five passes for 38 yards.

But the big story was Mahwah’s quarterback Jim Skrable who took the game into his own hands and rushed for 105 yards on three quarterback sneaks and three touchdowns, giving Mahwah the upset 21-6 victory over Westwood.
