County OKs Grant For Veteran Housing In Township Of Washington
The money will allow 4, 2-bedroom units to be built where the former Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6192 was on Jefferson Avenue.

TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON, NJ — The grounds of the former Veterans of Foreign Wars Post used to be a place where veterans could come and commune and be happy.
Now, thanks to a $400,000 federal grant, it will again.
Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County will build four, two-bedroom affordable housing units where VFW Post No. 6192 used to be. Two of the units will house senior citizens, two will house veterans.

The housing is made possible by a Home Investment Partnership grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The housing must be affordably-priced for low- to moderate-income individuals for 20 years, at which point the loan will be forgiven.
County officials expect construction to begin this summer.

“Projects like this are essential to maintaining that status," said Freeholder Mary Amoroso, who chairs the Freeholder Board's Community Development Committee. "We are fortunate to have partners like Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County that share our commitment to our county’s veterans."

Eliminating homeless has been a priority for county officials. The county essentially eliminating veteran homelessness last year. Officials announced last week that it was the first community nationwide to end chronic homelessness.
