Downtown Westwood Is Great: American Planning Association

WESTWOOD, NJ – While locals know downtown Westwood is among Bergen County's best business districts, it's now been officially recognized as a great place in New Jersey.

The area was one of the locations named as a “Great Place in New Jersey” for 2019 by the American Planning Association-New Jersey Chapter. For the last eight years, the association has recognized downtowns, streets and other public spaces that contribute to great communities and benefit the people who live, work, play and visit there.

“The main roads of downtown Westwood – Broadway, Washington Avenue, Westwood Avenue, 3rdAve, Center Ave, and Fairview Ave entice residents and visitors with a profusion of all things that make a downtown worth visiting: assorted restaurants, services, retail, commercial and community activity within an aesthetically pleasing, safe and perpetually improving neighborhood,” the APA-NJ wrote.

After Westwood became incorporated as a borough in 1894, development was “planned deliberately and with expert foresight to balance architectural and population growth with commercial and economic considerations,” the APA-NJ said. “A dedicated business district was formed along the main streets, radiating out from the town green, and as the decades unfolded, that neighborhood became peppered with mixed uses, retail, restaurants, service providers, professional offices, and residential dwellings, contained at each end by public parks or public buildings.”

Other 2019 New Jersey honorees are: Halsey Street in Newark, downtown Lambertville, Byrne Plaza in Wildwood and East Millstone Historic District.
