The Bergen County YJCC will visit two historic synagogues in New York City on Thursday, May 17. Guided tours will be provided at the Kehila Kedosha Janina Synagogue and at the Museum at Eldridge Street. These landmark structures are located on the Lower East Side.
The Kehila Kedosha Janina Synagogue, a New York City landmark, was built in 1927 by Romaniote Jews from Greece and remains virtually unchanged. It is the only synagogue in the Western Hemisphere of this tiny, obscure Jewish community.
The Eldridge Street Synagogue, built in 1887, tells the story of immigrant Jewish life. The Museum at Eldridge Street has beautifully restored this National Historic Landmark tha was the first great house of worship built by Eastern European immigrants and offers an opportunity for a look at its history, architecture and significance.
Transportation is provided via luxury coach, departing at 8:45 a.m. from the YJCC, 605 Pascack Road, Township of Washington. The fee is $59 for YJCC members and $65 for
non-members and includes a traditional Greek-Kosher lunch, transportation and incidentals. Reservations are due by May 3.
