Westwood Police Remind Residents Of NJ E-Bike Law Taking Effect This Week

WESTWOOD, NJ — The Westwood Police Department is reminding residents that New Jersey's new e-bike law takes effect on July 19, bringing new licensing, registration, and safety requirements for electric bicycle riders.

Police Chief Michael Pontillo is urging e-bike owners and their families to ensure they are in compliance before the law takes effect. Under the new requirements, riders must be at least 15 years old, possess either a valid New Jersey driver's license or an e-bike license, and register their e-bike with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

Motorized bicycles capable of traveling more than 20 mph must also carry insurance, and helmets are required for all e-bike riders. Adults age 17 and older who already have a valid New Jersey driver's license do not need to obtain a separate e-bike license.

The department is also encouraging parents and guardians to review the new rules with their children and emphasize safe riding practices and compliance with traffic laws.
