Hillsdale Named One Of The Safest Small Towns In U.S.

Breaking: The borough is one of 3 New Jersey municipalities to make the list.

HILLSDALE, NJ — The borough has been named one of the safest small towns in the country.

Compare Insurance Companies' (CIC) list of the Safest Small Towns considered the likeliness of residents becoming victim to a crime and the crime rate.

The company looked as sites, including Movoto, Sperling's Best Places and Area Vibes to find crime data.

The list only includes towns with fewer than 30,000 residents.

According to the list, Hillsdale locals have a one in 277 chance of experiencing a crime.

"In 2016, only one violent crime was reported (an assault)," CIC said. "That same year saw only 37 instances of property crime, 29 of which were petty theft."

Hillsdale emergency responders use a high-tech emergency notification system to try and keep residents safe.

Two other New Jersey towns made the list: Mount Arlington and Chatham Township. Both are in Morris County.
