School Board to Vote on Switch to November Elections

If approved, residents will not vote on the district's budget as long as it meets state requirements.

The Westwood Regional Board of Education is scheduled to vote on a resolution tonight that will eliminate the vote on next year's district budget and move school board elections to November for at least four years.

The move was made possible by a new law that went into effect last month. According to the law, the budget vote can only be eliminated if the proposed budget falls under a 2 percent levy cap. The purpose of moving the election is to increase voter turnout and save money by having residents vote on school board members at the same time they go in for regular November elections, according to the state Division of Elections.

The law requires the district to notify the county by February 17 if they pass the resolution, so Thursday's meeting will be the board's last chance to approve the change.
