Westwood Launching Pedestrian Safety Campaign Wednesday
Westwood's Street Smart New Jersey campaign aims to reduce pedestrian-vehicle crashes in the borough.

WESTWOOD, NJ — The borough wants to make the streets safer for pedestrians.
Local officials will announce Wednesday the start of Westwood's Street Smart New Jersey, a campaign that aims to reduce pedestrian-vehicle crashes in the borough.
Police Chief Michael Pontillo, Chris Montana, Borough Council president, and Lois Goldman, director of regional planning of the New Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) will speak about the campaign at a press conference at 4:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, officials announced.

There were 828 pedestrians killed and more than 22,000 injured in motor vehicle crashes in New Jersey from 2013 to 2017, the NJTPA stated in a news release. Pedestrian deaths accounted for more than 28 percent of all crash-related fatalities during that time.
New Jersey ranked 17th in the nation in pedestrian fatalities in 2016.
