2 Carteret Liquor Stores Sold Booze To Underage Undercover Cop

The two stores admitted they sold alcohol to an undercover police office posing as an underage minor this past December.

CARTERET, NJ — The borough of Carteret has suspended the liquor licenses of two local liquor stores after the establishments were caught selling alcohol to an underage undercover police officer, according to violation charges filed by Township.

Liquor Shop at 787 Roosevelt Avenue sold alcohol to an undercover Carteret police office posing as an underage minor on December 12, 2018 and Bottle Giant of Carteret at 101 Roosevelt Avenue did the same on October 22, 2018, according to charges.

Both stores admitted to the violations, the Township said in a press release.

Both liquor stores were notified of the charges and a hearing was held this past Monday, January 28, at which both licensees pleaded guilty. They were each sentenced to a seven-day suspension by the Carteret Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

Carteret Mayor Dan Reiman warned that undercover police officers will continue testing local liquor stores in the future.

“21 means 21, and undercover police officers will continue testing local establishments on a regular basis to ensure that patrons are carded sufficiently," Reiman said.

If either store is caught doing it again, they could lose their liquor license for 30 days.
