About 200 Kids Walk Out At Woodbridge High Wednesday

Principal Glenn Lottmann gave students a strict warning they could receive a two-day suspension if they left school grounds. Nobody did.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — A little under 200 students walked out of class Wednesday morning at Woodbridge High School.

The school administration actually helped organize the walkout Wednesday, and Principal Glenn Lottmann gave students a strict warning that they could face a two-day suspension if they left school grounds.

Students first met in the auditorium and students read the names of the 17 people killed in the Florida school shooting. Then teachers and staff invited the students if they wanted to walk out to the oval.

"The presentation ended by inviting students in both locations to walk outside on our oval for 17 minutes to pay respect to the victims of the school," said Lottmann. "Students were told they did not have to go outside if they did not want to."

"Before allowing the students to go outside we made several arrangements," he added. "First, we coned off all areas making it impossible for any car to come near the oval. Second, we had four police officers stationed around the perimeter of the oval to ensure safety. Third, our Superintendent, Dr. Robert Zega, and our District’s Coordinator of Safety, Mr. Brian Small, were also stationed around the perimeter. Finally, we had all of our guidance counselors, physical education teachers, and administrative team outside with the students."

"There were less than 200 students outside between 10:00-10:17 and they were closely supervised at all times," he added.
