Avenel Firefighter Hospitalized Battling House Fire Wednesday Night

AVENEL, NJ — A firefighter was injured Wednesday night while battling a fire in the Avenel section of Woodbridge.

The firefighter is a Woodbridge Twp. resident and a career firefighter with the Avenel Fire Department.

The fire broke out at 9:21 p.m. at a private home on the 1200 block of Rahway Avenue, said Avenel Fire Official Cory Spillar. The residents inside the home noticed smoke and fire coming from the roof, and it is suspected the fire was an electrical fire that originated in the area around the porch light, said Spillar.

Firefighters responded and two had to be treated on scene for heat-related injuries. One firefighter had to be admitted to the hospital for an illness he sustained while on the scene, battling the fire.

He remains hospitalized, in good condition, as of Thursday, said Spillar. He was not identified by name.

The home was severely damaged by heat, water and smoke. Responding fire companies from Woodbridge Twp., Port Reading, Hopelawn, Iselin, Perth Amboy, Keasbey and South Plainfield all responded.
