Carteret Fires Police Director Charged with DWI

The Manalapan resident was hired Feb. 1 as the town's police director. He crashed his Lexus in Old Bridge three weeks later.

Carteret, NJ - Carteret has fired its police director who was arrested and charged with DWI after crashing his car after only about three weeks on the job.

Ronald Franz, a Manalapan resident, was hired Feb. 1 as the town’s police director. On Feb. 23, he crashed his 2015 Lexus on Rt. 9 near Ferry Road in Old Bridge at 6:30 p.m. Old Bridge officers who responded said Franz appeared drunk and they could smell alcohol on his breath.

He was charged with DUI and suspended without pay after the arrest. On Friday, Carteret announced it had fired Franz, reported MyCentralJersey.com.

He made $70,000 a year as the Carteret police director. A retired New Jersey State Police captain, Franz receives a $77,706 annual pension.
