Carteret Man Accused Of Murdering His Own Grandmother

CARTERET, NJ — A Carteret man is accused of murdering his own grandmother over the summer, the Middlesex County prosecutor and Carteret police said Tuesday.

Shawn Gonzalez, 39, of Carteret has been arrested and charged with the murder of his grandmother Dolores Babij, 89, of Carteret.

At approximately 3:57 a.m. on Aug. 27, Carteret police officers responded to Babij’s residence following a call for first aid. Upon their arrival, the officers found the older woman deceased and seated in a chair in her home.

Police say she was assaulted and killed by her grandson earlier that morning. Police did not release any additional details on the death.

Gonzalez is currently being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center where he is pending a Detention Hearing in Superior Court.
