Downtown Jazz Festival and LeGrand Fundraiser in the Five Things
A great jazz festival's a short trip away, and your lunch can help a Rutgers football player as he fights a heroic battle.

- The Sweet Sounds Downtown Jazz Festival in Westfield is nothing if not unique. Every Tuesday during July and August, from 7 to 9 pm at four outdoor venues throughout the town: the David Aaron Quintet at Central Avenue in front of Banana Republic; the Michael Packer Blues Band on the lawn in front of the North Avenue Train Station; the VooDudes at the plaza at the corner of East Broad and North Avenue; and the Karen Rodriguez Latin Jazz Ensemble at Elm Street in front of the Baptist Church. - The State Fair Meadowlands continues today and through July 10 at the Giant Stadium Fairgrounds - for the entire family. Thrill to animal rides, sideshows, freak shows, a food extravaganza, crafts, games, rides, and more. Gate admission weekdays is $7 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under and for seniors. - A fascinating photo exhibition on the former USSR in its waning days is at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers in New Brunswick. ": Soviet Photography in the 1980s" is comprised of 50 works by 18 artists, who captured a very particular time in the country's history. Hours are 10 am to 4:30 pm.; admission is $6 for non-members. - Rejuvenate: Recycled Materials as the New Medium, the new being held at the Barron Arts Center, continues today. Gallery hours are Monday thru Friday 11 am to 4 pm, and weekends from 2 pm to 4 pm.
