Three-Car Accident on 287 Tuesday Morning, State Police Say

An allegedly drunk driver caused a three-car accident and injured a woman on Interstate 287 just before the Tuesday morning rush hour.

Edison, NJ - An allegedly drunk driver caused a three-car accident and injured a woman on Interstate 287 just before the Tuesday morning rush hour, New Jersey State Police confirmed to Patch.

The accident occurred at 5:19 a.m. in the northbound lanes of 287 at mile marker 3.9, which is in Edison Township, State Police Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams said.

Jomo Gordon, 37, of Plainfield, was driving a red Toyota Solara when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a woman driving a Volkswagen Passat, Williams said. The force of the impact pushed the Passat off the highway and into nearby woods, he said.

Gordon then hit a tractor trailer that was parked on the side of the interstate.

A driver passing by stopped at the scene and called 911. The caller said the driver of the Toyota ”appeared drunk,” Williams said.

Gordon climbed out of his car window and was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where his blood was tested for alcohol, Williams said.

The results came back and he was charged with driving while intoxicated, Williams said.

The woman in the Passat suffered injuries to her hand in the accident, Williams said. She was taken to JFK Medical Center and treated for the non- life-threatening injuries, he said.

The man in the tractor trailer was not injured.

State Police from the Somerville barracks responded to the scene, as did South Plainfield police and South Plainfield EMS.
