Edison Police Blue is Going Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness

You can go pink along with them-- find out how

EDISON, NJ-- In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Edison Police Department is trading in their blue for pink-- underneath their uniforms, that is.

Police officers will wear pink t-shirts that say "Fighting More Than Crime" under their usual uniforms. A small portion of the pink will be visible around the collar, sending "a subtle visual message,"Police Chief Thomas Bryan said.

“Every police officer in our department has family members, friends, neighbors, or simply knows someone touched by this pervasive form of cancer,” PBA President Michael Schwarz said in a statement. “If our slightly off beat, unorthodox approach helps just one woman with early detection, encourages her to see a doctor and receive early, life-saving treatment — it's mission accomplished."

Edison will go further than just wearing pink: all police vehicles will distribute pamphlets with information about early detection, treatment, and local breast health services.

“It is an understatement to say how proud and grateful I am to the men and women in our department who created and are participating in this month-long initiative," Deputy Police Chief Ronald Mieczkowski said. Mieczkowski lost his wife, Sandra, to breast cancer in 2008. She was 44.
