Events To Be Held Throughout Woodbridge To Celebrate "Senior Month"

The Woodbridge mayor held a senior summit this week; he said officials plan to further expand health and wellness services for seniors.

There will be programs and events throughout Woodbridge in May, as officials celebrate Senior Month.

Earlier this week, Mayor John E. McCormac hosted the 9th Annual Township-wide Senior Summit.

Seniors “expressed opinions on a diversity of topics and offered ideas and suggestions on how to improve senior-related programs and services throughout the community,’’ according to a news release from the township.

Many of the recommendations made at last year’s summit have been implemented, including the expansion of computer classes for senior citizens and expanded physical fitness and wellness programs, including a new SilverSneakers exercise circuit at the community center.

“The senior residents attending the ‘Senior Summit’ were aware of the available Township-sponsored services and programs and, more importantly, expressed opinions about what they feel the Township should provide in the way of services and programs. The Mayor’s Office and staff were impressed with the opinions, suggestions and ideas offered on how to address Township-wide issues, along with an understanding of what needs to be done to improve the ‘Quality of Life’ for everyone,” McCormac said in a prepared statement.

In that statement, he said officials plan to further expand health and wellness services, crackdown on speeding near senior facilities, add to the free summer concerts series and add more vendors at the Farmers Market.

Representatives from the Woodbridge Township Department of Health & Human Services, the Multi-Service Program on Aging & Division on Aging, the Department of Recreation & Resident Services, the Woodbridge Police Department, Department of Public Works, the Evergreen Senior Center, the Woodbridge Community Center, the Woodbridge Township Public Library, The Barron Arts Center, and many Woodbridge businesses and medical care facilities participated in the event.

Other events scheduled for this month include a Mother’s Day Brunch at the Evergreen Center on Friday, a Senior Art Show Reception at the Barron Arts Center on Monday, and a Senior Volunteer Recognition Lunch on May 27 at the Evergreen Center.
